What makes this one hard

English expects a number out loud. Hinting that you hope to be paid more reads as though you have not decided what you want, and a manager will hear it as an opening for them to fill. Say the figure or the range, then the evidence — that order, because the evidence is heard as support for a claim you have already made. When the answer is "let me see what I can do", that is not a yes; the useful follow-up asks what would have to be true and by when.
