Meeting your friend's partner

They have heard about you, you have heard about them, and your friend is watching.

What makes this one hard

"I've heard so much about you" is a set phrase, and taking it literally is the trap — nobody is reporting that they have been briefed. The expected reply is a light deflection: "all good things, I hope" does the whole job. What actually carries this conversation is the third person in it. Referring to your friend by name and telling a short story that involves both of you gives the two of you a subject, which is the thing a first meeting is usually short of.
